Frequently Asked Questions
1. When should I consider cosmetic rhinoplasty?
The simple answer is when you are unhappy with your appearance. Surgery to reshape the nose, chin and cheeks is generally done in the late teens and twenties.
2. What should I expect?
Our goal is to improve your appearance through cosmetic surgery. We know that with an improved look, often comes improved confidence.
We are committed to achieving a completely natural look. It is important to have realistic expectations from surgery. And Computer Imaging helps to show patients what may be accomplished.
Not all patients are candidates for cosmetic surgery. Besides the surgeons skill, other important parameters in understanding the surgical outcome involve the patients skin texture, underlying facial bone structure, general health and ability to heal.
3. How long do results of face surgery last?
Permanent changes to the nose, cheeks and chin will last a lifetime. Surgery done for aging changes are less permanent, as the aging clock continues to tick.
The goal of these surgeries is to provide a more youthful rested look and generally improvement will last from five to fifteen years.
4. What about Anesthesia?
All of our procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. For this reason we use a twilight anesthesia, also called intravenous or champagne anesthesia.
Patients are totally asleep and do not remember anything about the surgery. This type of anesthesia is preferred because of its safety record and a marked reduction in postoperative swelling and bruising.
5. What is the recovery time for cosmetic surgery?
The recovery time from anesthesia usually takes about one to two hours. Patients are not allowed to drive themselves home following their procedure, so be sure to make arrangements for a ride home.
It is very helpful to have some care for the first 24 hours following surgery. Written instructions are provided for each patient. Temporary swelling, bruising or discomfort may occur.
Anti-swelling medication is given to each patient during the surgery and pain medications are given to all patients. The use of intermittent cool compresses for 48 hours may help to reduce swelling.
The use of natural health products to reduce swelling, such as arnica, may also be helpful. Strenuous physical activities are restricted for approximately three weeks.
6. What are the risks?
Although complications are possible, they are uncommon. There are, however, risks common to all procedures, and some unforeseen complications may include bleeding, unfavorable scarring, infection and reaction to drugs or anesthetics.
Risks specific to each procedure will be discussed prior to surgery.
