Facial Fillers
Over the past several years, a variety of products have been developed and designed to help reduce facial wrinkles, smooth skin and enlarge lips, cheeks and chins. These products reduce the wrinkles that occur between the eyes (glabellar wrinkles), between the cheek and lips (nasolabial creases) and the upper and lower lips.
The groove that developes between the lower eye fullness and the cheek (tear trough groove) may also be helped and may be used instead of surgery on the lower eyelid, in certain cases. Through facial fillers, enhancement of the cheeks and chin is possible.
Presently, the most common products used for facial fillers contain hyaluronic acid, and these include Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm. These products last approximately 6 months, but in areas of nonmovement may last up to two years.
The use of fat from ones own tissue into larger areas of the face may also be helpful, but the fat is absorbed about half of the time. The procedure to use fat to enhance the facial area requires the use of the operating room.
Longer lasting injectable products are available, but do carry the risk of having long lasting complications, such as lumps or bumps at or near the injection sites.
